When I experiment with different workouts, I always feel like I’ve finally found the perfect one. I go all out, get obsessed, and eventually burn out, leading me to try something new all over again. I’ve gone through phases of yoga, Pilates, barre classes, and running. The only type of workout I’ve avoided is the intense ones where they yell at you to push harder, because I know I wouldn’t excel at that.
I love the trend of athleisure because it allows me to wear athletic wear as a legitimate outfit, not just for running quick errands. Being able to step out into the world wearing a stretch top and sweatpants and still be considered fashionable is something I truly appreciate. I want to urge the younger generation to never go back to the era of low-rise jeans, as that was a dreadful time we do not need to revisit.
Some health trends I can’t seem to get behind include meditation classes, as my mind tends to race even more during those sessions. I also tried being vegan for a year or two, and it was the healthiest I’ve ever felt. However, I eventually fell off the wagon and tried doing vegan most days, which didn’t work out. It was a slippery slope for me.
One of my goals is to incorporate more fun and silliness into my life. For the past decade, my routine has mainly revolved around working and recovering, leaving little room for anything else. This is a common reality for many people – work, recover, repeat. Injecting a bit of playfulness into my life is something I strive for.
Look out for the June issue of Shape magazine, hitting stands on May 15th.
